The General Old Age Pensions Act (AOW) provides for a phased increase in the state pension age. From 2026, the AOW age is automatically linked to life-expectancy trends. The law provides that any further increase in the AOW age is determined annually based on the average remaining life expectancy of 65-year-olds. Any increase in the AOW age is announced five years in advance each time. Last year, the AOW age for 2026 was set at 67.
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has published its forecast of average remaining life expectancy at age 65 for 2027 and 2033. In its new forecasts, CBS assumes an average remaining life expectancy at age 65 of 20.93 years in 2027 and 21.62 years in 2033. The AOW age is set based on the forecast for 2027, applying the formula set out in the law. Applying that formula shows that the AOW age for calendar year 2027 will not be increased. It remains set at 67.
